Mr. Kimitaka Kato (JDMA Advisor: Former Managing Director, Japan Institute of Design Promotion)

I will summarize the flow of "design" evolving with the times from the on-site experience of design that I have experienced in the company for more than 40 years, and give an overview of "design" now and in the future. At that time, "design" is analyzed along with each time axis of "value, technology, physicality, and society", and as a result, "design" is fulfilled in response to changes in social values and technological evolution. Let's take a bird's-eye view of the roles and achievements that have been achieved, and take a bird's-eye view of the direction of "design" that is expected in the future. In addition, I would like to discuss with you the keywords that interest you at this time.

"Phantom limb pain" is a mysterious phenomenon in which the limbs that should have been lost after amputation of the limbs or legs are felt to exist (phantom limbs), and the phantom limbs are severely hurt. Phantom limbs and phantom limb pain can occur not only after amputation of the limbs, but also when the limbs are paralyzed due to nerve damage or spinal cord injury.
Inomata experienced a serious injury in a motorcycle accident at the age of 17. His right arm surgery was successful, but he subsequently suffered from phantom limb pain that hurts his supposedly numb arm. Currently, I am working on research on devices that use VR technology to relieve the pain.
We face various difficulties in our lives, but this time we would like to ask Mr. Inomata to talk about how design can contribute to pain.

Keywords: paradigm shift, COP25, CSR, social value, social design

Entering the 21st century, environmental problems, global population growth, declining birthrates in developed countries, economic globalization, and technological innovation are undergoing a paradigm shift everywhere. When applied to Japan, the concentration of population in metropolitan areas centered on Tokyo, the decline of local communities, the arrival of a super-aging society, and the decline in the working-age population will have a major impact on our society and lifestyle. I am giving.

To date, our society has formed social systems, institutions, education, and values under the scheme of market and consumption centered on industry and technology. So-called economic social development and material affluence have become indicators of modernization and a happy life. And the economic hierarchy in society was completed from the category of working-age population.

However, the paradigm shift shown above is trying to completely overturn the modern society that has developed so far. For example, efforts toward a low-carbon society in terms of environmental issues have become an international issue. At the 25th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP25) in 2019, many companies from around the world and Japan participated, and the momentum for corporate management, product development, and distribution that does not burden the global environment has been so far. It was an opportunity to increase. Investors who participated in COP25 even say that they can no longer invest in companies that do not have CSR.

It can be said that this case is not just a superficial improvement of the corporate image, but a case where the creation of essential social value is required. Turning to Japan, it is said that it is a marginal village, for example, due to the disparity between large cities and regions, which is extremely concentrated. This is also a term derived from modern economic indicators, but there are still many energetic regions and villages in Japan that do not take such a view.

There is the tradition and culture of the region, and the wisdom and creativity that has been nurtured so far. If there are ideas and measures to revitalize this, the region will be restored, and if the circulation of people and traffic can be established, the economy will naturally follow.

In recent years, local art festivals have been popular, but people from inside and outside are attracted to the small islands of Setouchi, which no one has visited before, and are attracted to art and design. Some people took this opportunity to realize the charm of the island and move to it. And there are cases where the closed elementary school has reopened.

At such a major turning point in the era, the role and possibilities of the design field (in a broad sense including the art field) may be increasing more than ever. Design was once in the midst of the British Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, but in its early stages it was well suited to society and people's lives.

Design has been deeply linked to today's enterprises and markets, product development and distribution since the 20th century, when industrial systems and market economies were established. The major paradigm shift of our time can be said to be comparable to the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. At this point, I think there is a need for design activities that go beyond the framework of companies, economy, production and consumption, and broadly focus on society, culture, and the region, that is, social design activities. ..
I think there are issues, hints, seeds, and ideas and creativity to solve the problems of the present age. And it is necessary to explore how to activate these possibilities and what measures can be used to expand into modern society, industry, and daily life.

The Japan Design Management Association will investigate and research a wide range of problems and issues from the above fields and deepen discussions. Our mission is to propose and implement effective measures in collaboration with related fields and areas.

Five Phases of Design Management

he Japan Design Management Association is thinking about the future of design management and its activities in five phases. It is 1. Social design 2. Regional design 3. Life design 4. Corporate design 5. There are five phases of creativity education. Until now, design management has developed by developing the theory and practice of design in the cycle of management, technology, production, distribution, consumption and life culture from the viewpoint of "corporate design". This axis will not change in the future, but today, the roles, practices and research required for design are social (Society), regional (Region), life (Life), and management (Corporation). , Directed to the creative side (Creation). At the same time, these things are also required for corporate activities, research and development, and education. In addition, SDGs "Sustainable Development Goals" are also required to be put into practice in society, regions, companies, and education as a realistic issue. The Japan Design Management Association (JDMA) will develop comprehensive activities through social cooperation and international cooperation, based on practice and research on these issues.

* The SDGs were adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015, and are the 17 goals set by 193 UN member states to achieve in the 15 years from 2016 to 2030.

Social Desgn

Social design can be thought of as an activity that envisions how to create shared value in society and specifically links it to the activities of local communities, communities, companies, and individuals. The spread and significance of these activities is great, and there is an increasing demand for design integration functions (functions that connect fields and different industries by design) and information dissemination.

Regional Design

How to revitalize the region and community is a major issue for Japan. Regions and communities have their own history, their lands, and their unique values and cultures rooted in people. Inheriting and developing these is an important viewpoint for regional and community revitalization.

Life Design

"Life design" is an activity to make a life plan in order to live a worthwhile life. Today, which is said to be the age of 100 years of life, thinking about the outlook on life and lifestyle only from the perspective of working age is no longer suitable for the coming era. Major trends in Japanese society: The digital revolution, super-aging, declining birthrate, etc. will continue to progress in the future. In such an uncertain and uncertain era, a design-oriented life plan that "draws dreams, makes hypotheses, repeats trials and errors, and walks your own life" will make your future your future. It will open abundantly.

Corporate Design

Business management and design are becoming more and more relevant today. In addition to corporate organizations, we are strengthening our design commitment not only in various organizational management (administrative organizations, third sector, social welfare corporations, etc.). In addition, how to connect new design fields such as service design and UX design (User Experience Dsign: design that enhances experience value) to corporate management and R & D is also important as the role of design management.

Education of Creativity

Education has been institutionalized from the perspectives of social development, industrial development, and life development, and today's educational environment has been formed. Creativity education will be very important in the future development of society, industry, and life. Efforts that go beyond the traditional educational framework are needed. Creativity education is indispensable for looking at the current situation and future of Japan. We will develop activities to practice creativity education from a social perspective.
